Janani Hariharan, a Science student chose to do a Content writing internship from Indiabookstore in Delhi.  Read on to find more.. Why I chose to do this internship.. I’ve always wanted to work with books and literature. However, after taking up science as a career, I thought that this wouldn’t be possible. An internship like this was a great opportunity because it allowed me to explore my alternate interests and do something useful with all the books I read and criticise! What I did during the internship.. I was able to contribute to the content on the blog, Bookish, in terms of both quality and quantity. I started out as a content writer, writing articles on all things bookish and reviewing books by upcoming and established authors. I also got the chance to interview a couple of authors, which was something I’d always wanted to do. After a few months, I progressed to being a sub-editor and handling presentation and quality of content as well. For a few months, I was responsible for designing weekly newsletters and helping with promotion of content on social media platforms as well. What I learnt My biggest takeaway from this internship will be ideas on how to coordinate tasks between a largely remote team, while ensuring successful and timely delivery of content. I also got exposure to the world of publishing, content writing and SEO. An internship like this was a great opportunity because it allowed me to explore my alternate interests and do something useful with all the books I read and criticise! The best thing about the internship? The opportunity to go behind-the-scenes of the Indian literature scene. Before starting the internship, I was excited combined with a bit of wonder on what it would entail. Right now, it feels great to be a part of this team – there’s always something new to learn! Pravin Shekar, Founder of Krea talks to us on how he solved his talent crunch by recruiting interns for his company. About Krea With one of the largest Indian Healthcare panels, Krea is blazing its way – re-energizing healthcare research and data collection in India. We believe that for countries like India, it is a mix of access panels and fieldwork that holds the key for effective research. Our Indian Healthcare panels are supplemented by our India Field Network, shortening the time for data-collection. It’s all about India: Physicians, Patients, Pharmacists, Nurses, KOLs and custom-connect (Payers, Purchase Managers, Decision Makers, Hospital owners). Krea → Pumping-up Healthcare Data collection in India! The Bind As a start up, hiring is purely on personal branding – and standing. A start up per se, for some time, is only defined by the founders. Therefore, we faced the usual problems of starry-eyed resources who had large-brands in their mind, but not the required openings (there!)…. However, with the right network and connects we tried sorting this out. A start up is a start up and offers a unique learning experience and it is our job to communicate that clearly! To ensure that they know what they are getting into. Impromptu parties, escapes, late-night candle-burning work, a role that ranges from an office-boy to social-media-guru! The Fix We solved it majorly by recruiting interns across functions. From a start up, when we were one functional glob to the time we were evolving into marketing and sales and background research and operations. We have had interns for each of these roles and most of them have done a cracker of a job. The core learning that any intern takes away from Krea is to get over the fear of talking to strangers. Krea is in the world of market research. The crux of the job involves a whale of communication and by the time the internship is complete, he/she has built a thick skin and takes on any challenge with a smile The Twenty19 Connect We’ve been a twenty19 fan for quite some time now and used it extensively to hire interns for Krea. Ease of recruitment makes me come back to Twenty19 frequently. I run a lean company at Krea and cannot have a bloated support team. When someone like Twenty19 does a focused work in matching the right interns to my need, it only leaves the selection and operations to me (or my resources). That frees up a lot of time. And for a start up, time is money!

Before I start I am sure everyone reading this blog will be able to connect easily to what I am going to talk in the next 150 words The Red signal alert on the top right side of my phone gives me a fit and I am always prepared (365 Days) for such a situation with a charger in my bag I know you guessed it…Yes I am going to talk about our over connected (Cell phone Addicted )world.   Lately I have been noticing this trend among my group of friends – all of us keep checking our phone frequently and get jittery when there is no ping on whatsapp is my mobile data not working? (This is what I think) I realized that I have to take a stand and change this habit in me because in many situations I witnessed that I absorb more interesting things when my cell phone is miles away from me. I tested this for myself at office and inferred that most of my work gets done perfectly when I focus on what I do and forget about who is pinging me on phone. Now I consciously stay away from my phone when I work and meet my friends. It is so amazing to see the amount of new things that I learn everyday from the same group of people who I know for so many years. Here are some points on how cell phone addiction might affect you at your possible work place: It is your first day at office and you tend to keep checking your phone – this gives a very different picture about you to others at your office. Your are always inside a shell just you and your phone – this is when you lose scope to learn new things from your colleagues This habit greatly hampers your productivity. Your concentration level at work falls low and it generally reflects on the work you do. We are actually missing out on a lot of amazing moments that we can live and learn everyday. BTW, I am not anti Whatsapp or Snap chat You should definitely use all these apps and stay connected but try reducing the time spent on them and see the change it brings to your life. (You will be surprised) I am really keen to know your views on this. Do let me know!

Dabbawalas basically deliver food – they collect food from houses and distribute to offices. Since they carry dabba`s of food, the name comes so. They do this at a very nominal charge. The purpose is basically your wife or mom or even girlfriend [( but this occurs rarely, no girlfriend cooks :)] can cook the food and send to you – hot and fresh. What is the number ‘3.4’ ? Ok! lets come back to the figure 3.4/1000000—difficult to count the zeros right! It’s 1 million. There is a statistical concept in quality management called 6 sigma. Example: Say you manufacture 1000000( 1 million ) pens. Out of which, only 3.4 pens don’t write properly i.e. 9,99,996.60 pens write perfectly –  that’s something great, right? This is the concept of 6 sigma. Applying this concept of Six Sigma, we can tell that, Dabbawalas make less than 3.4 mistakes out of 8 million (8,000,000) deliveries. That is, out of 8 million deliveries, they wrongly deliver a dabba,  to a different location, less than 3.4 times- oh my god! That’s unbelievable…greater than a 6 sigma. Lessons we can learn from Dabbawalas Management is not about degrees – It’s all about Skills. Top B schools like HARVARD, INSEAD, MIT, IIMs, SPJAIN, XLRI do case studies about Dabbawalas. This clearly indicates science of Management alone is not useful without Practice. Education alone doesn’t pave way for good results: Most of the Dabbawala`s have not studied much. (fancy MBA degrees, top brands not needed to achieve) Dabbawalas do what we call in modern times as “supply chain management” – which MNCs and big corporations take years to perfect. Dabbawalas with their smart system have cracked this problem easily! They make complex concepts look simple: Dabbawalas  use easy to understand symbolic coding system. It is called Visual Inspection (use your eyes) in big corporate companies Their Accuracy is 99.99966% in deliveries – I don’t think any company in India has reached 6 sigma level (even though they are trying) On time, every time - be it the infamous Mumbai rains, floods, traffic jams etc.  they ensure that their delivery is punctual, every single time. Anyone can receive recognition if they do a good job- Lastly, They have the Guinness World Record – Carrying most number of tiffin box crate on the head. If Dabbawalas can do it, why can`t we become good managers? All it takes is a bit of hard work, commitment and most importantly Attitude to learn Let`s do it! Cheers Pictures Courtesy: Google Images

Do you want to land the job of your dreams?
Do you want to avoid this happening to your resume?

Resumes getting Shredded

Let’s face it. There’s a lot of killing competition out there. Companies receive 100s of applications daily. You may have the skills. But there’s a possibility of it getting overlooked and missed in all this rush. Well, here are some really creative ideas you can follow to create that big impression and stand out from the rest.

01. Milk Box CV

The industry is very competitive and agencies receive hundreds of emails with portfolios and CV’s every day.  So I had to come up with something different, in order to get attention. So I decided to create a Milk BOX with my CV on it, so I could send it to the agencies inside a “Creative Lunch Box” - explains Miguel Rato

Using the ingredients to display skills and the level of expertise as calories, for example, HTML & CSS (Medium Calories) is very innovative and really gets the desired attention. Brilliant execution.

02. Google Inspired Interactive CV

Hitesh Jinabhai's Google Resume

To grab the attention of potential employers, I knew I had to stand out from every other applicant. So, I came up with the concept of a Google inspired interactive CV.

I wanted to create an original and interactive experience with a PDF. The interactivity came from  elements like rollovers and buttons and the CV could be navigated like a website.

The Google concept was born from recognizing how people use technology today. What do potential employers do, when they screen candidate? Google them! So why not pre-empt that, by giving them an interactive Google CV that they could click on and navigate. – explains Hitesh Jinabhai

This is great! Using something that is already popular, giving it a creative twist and doing all this using only minimal technology. Attention grabber.

03. Chocolate Box CV

Rob Jervis' Box of Chocolates

I felt the need for an interesting CV as emails are too easily ignored. I’d been making chocolates at home for a few months and one day, came up with the genius idea of making my CV into a box of chocolates.

I handed them to numerous companies all to great response, I landed a two week placement at LFH (now Illumination) and subsequently a full time junior design role. – explains Rob Jervis

This is a Classic! If the interviewer is a lady, I bet you have the job :)

Life is a Box of Chocolates

When you work so hard to stand out and create a resume that makes an impact, the interviewer is bound to give you the right kind of attention and your dream job that seemed an up-hill task to you suddenly seems attainable.

So, be brave. Be creative. Dream big. Keep Learning. And do something unique. Because if you don’t, someone else will ;)
