Meet Sarang Ananda Rao – A music lover, final year B.E. CSE student from SSN College of Engineering, Founder & Executive Editor of Musicperk.com – exclusive website for providing quality music news and album reviews. Read more about this perky entrepreneur…
Describe your initiatives/ activity
I founded Musicperk.com – an exclusive music website and led my team to make it one of the world’s top 100 music blogs (as per Technorati), Top 200 student startups (NEN) and to get 10,000+ hits/month.
What motivated you to take this initiative?
I had this idea of starting an exclusive music website for a long time. I wanted something that would help me tell the best song in an album at first glance/scan. I discussed the idea of a website exclusively for music with my friends (Pramodh and Sri Krishna who are part of the Musicperk Team) and their support helped me implement the idea. I have been an active part of the Entrepreneurship Development Cell (SSN’s Lakshya) and that has always motivated me.
What roadblocks did you hit? How did you overcome them?
The initial cost for the website (I wanted to have my own investment). I had actually won the Best Campus Ambassador for Twenty19.com in December 2010 and the cash award helped me have the initial investment for this idea.
What were the high points?
I have been featured in The Hindu NXG on May 10, 2012. Musicperk.com featured as a top 100 music blog was another high point. I was a part of the SSN EDC team which won the champions trophy at E-Week 2011 by NEN.
How do you balance your initiative with college, exams, friends and hanging out?
I believe irrespective the 24 hour time constraint in a day, you can always find time for the things you are passionate about. You need to prioritize whichever you feel is important and make sure you allocate enough time for the rest.
Where do you see yourself in the next couple of years?
I am inclined towards management/consulting. I would like Musicperk.com to be the best exclusive music website in India in the near future.
Did you do an internship /training last summer? If yes, where? What’s one awesome thing you learned there?
Actually yes, 3 internships so far. I spent the summer of 2011 at IISC, 2010 working as an intern for Railsfactory, Madras Atomic Power Station. The best part of the working as an intern is that you are a lot more clear about your interests and where you want to be in the near future. You also get a chance to have the experience of being in a totally different environment – university or firm. It gives you an opportunity to cultivate your interests and grow.
What is your favorite book/movie of all time?
As a kid, I loved the science fiction books of Jules Verne and H.G.Wells. I would recommend books by Rashmi Bansal including Stay Hungry Stay Foolish and Paulo Coelho’s The Alchemist (great ideas are put in the simplest way possible).
Which inspiring personality would you like to have dinner with? Why?
Sachin Tendulkar for his charisma in cricket and Christopher Nolan, Steve Jobs for their out-of-the-box thinking.
What’s your advice for students like you?
If you have an idea, implement it and learn from the failures. I always believe that “every person is born to achieve a goal and often you may need to chase your dreams to fulfill that goal”. You need to identify where you want to be and strive towards it.
Do you follow any blogs/people on Twitter, forums, discussion groups or other web/non-web sources that you learn from?
Actually too many. Notable blogs include Mashable, Techcruch, Venture beat, Business Week, New Scientist, Huffington Post, and The Business Insider. Discussion Groups include – Chennai Geeks, TEDxChennai.
Tell us about your other notable initiatives/accomplishments
I have been the campus ambassador for Twenty19.com I was a part of the SSN EDC team which won the champions trophy at E-Week 2011 by NEN.
Anything else you think we missed out on asking?
