“Don’t give up”- All of us must have heard these 3 words as advice from a friend or relative at some point in our lives. Although quite easy to pass on as pearls of wisdom, these words aren’t as easy to follow. Despite the fact that these 3 words capture the essence of what we are supposed to do when we meet with failure or a speed bump in life, this article will give you the step by step recipe on how to develop that attitude.

  1. Set clear goals

This is a tip that is commonly given by your next door neighbour as well as best-selling self-help books. But it is an important tip because it actually gives results. One cannot have a “never give up” attitude unless they have defined what they are trying to not give up on! Make 2 goal sheets: one short term and another long term. Each list should not have more than 3 items on it. This is important so that you can distribute your focus effectively. Trying to achieve more than you can take on will only leave you with poor results and efficiently achieving a small number of goals will be more productive. You can update your short term goals as frequently as you complete your list while you can set up milestones in order to stay on track for your long term goals.

  1. Create motivation

When we set a goal and start working towards it, we have a passion driving us. Unfortunately, your passion is a fire that needs rekindling every now and then because people tend to lose motivation as time goes by. Here’s how you can keep yourself fuelled:

  • Celebrate small victories

Appreciate yourself for achieving small milestones or completing certain tasks by rewarding yourself with your favourite food, movie or anything that helps you relax.

  • Focus on progress

Focus on how much work you have already finished instead of looking at how much work is left to be done. One way to do this is, if you maintain a to-do list, make a separate “done” list instead of crossing items out on the to-do list itself.

  • Stay positive

Create a routine to keep yourself positive whenever you feel like you are losing your drive. This can involve a pep talk, favourite positivity quotes or a peppy playlist. Find something that keeps your boat floating!

  1. When overwhelmed…
  • Make a list

Break down your activities into small chunks to help you feel like it is possible to achieve your task. Focus on one task at a time as multitasking at this time might make you feel more overwhelmed.

  • Take a break

Taking a break might help refresh you and your perspective on the task when feeling like you are underwater. Make sure your break isn’t too distracting and is short enough that you can still get back to work.

  1. Steer clear of…
  • Distractions

Avoid activities that will distract you easily when working. This can be easily achieved in this day and age by simply unplugging most of your electronics and working in a calm and quiet environment.

  • Unrealistic expectations

Most people tend to give up because they don’t get results fast enough. You cannot give up on your new fitness routine because you didn’t lose any weight in the first week. Set realistic results to work for so that you know what to expect at the end of a hard day’s work.

At the end of the day, one can lead the horse to the edge of the river, but one cannot make the horse drink.
