Highlights of the conference: The problem of protecting the built environment in earthquake-prone regions involves not only the optimal design and construction of new facilities, but also the upgrading and rehabilitation of existing structures including heritage buildings. One of the most catastrophic earth quake occurred on January 26, 2001, India's 52nd Republic Day, at 08:46 AM local time (3:16 UTC) and lasted for over two minutes. The earthquake reached a magnitude of 7.7 and has caused a destruction of 3 lac houses and damaged 7 lac buildings, though all the Indian standard codes were in Practice (IS-4326) during 2001. The loss of life and property were mainly due to the ignorance of existing codes at the time of construction. Hence to create awareness among all the stake holders of the building industry, it is mandatory to follow such IS codes by satisfying the INTEGRITY AND DUCTILITY.
